Born in 1962, Professor Dr. Thomas Hirth studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1992 he finished his Phd thesis and started to work at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, holding different positions, the last being that of a director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart. In 2008, he became in addition professor at the University of Stuttgart and head of the Institute of Interfacial Process Engineering and Plasma Technology. From 2012 to 2015, Professor Hirth was spokesman of the Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences and Member of the Presidential Council of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Since January 2016 he is Vice President for Innovation and International Affairs at KIT.
