Vaccines: Science and Social Media

Chairperson: Elena Meli

How have vaccines evolved in recent years thanks to innovation and new technologies? How can technological progress influence the development of vaccines (ricombinant DNA, conjugate and genomic vaccines and, today’s synthetic technology and vaccine adjuvants, etc.)? Vaccine development research and innovation is time consuming and carefully controlled and has led to increasingly effective and safe drugs and thus vaccination has become more and more important in infectious disease prevention. Despite this scientific progress, however, social resistance has grown. To understand the nature of this resistance, a web analysis of Italian opinions, language and trends on the vaccine theme will be performed paying special attention to social media contents (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and the various discussion spaces (blogs, online articles, forums).
